A study to evaluate the use of waste cooking oil from the food industry as polyols for the manufacture of biodegradable polyurethane assessed the effects of casting conditions, isocyanate to hydroxyl group (NCO/OH) ratio, amount of oil, and additives on polyurethane sheets. Optimal processing conditions included blending 30 pbw oil, 70 pbw polyethylene glycol, and 79.7 pbw diphenylmethane diisocyanate (NCO/OH ratio of 1.6); casting into a mold at ambient temperature; and hot air postcuring at 120 degrees for 4 hours. 7 refs.
