Polyurethane formulations provide a hardness rank of 10 degrees Shore A to 95 degrees Shore D. Elastane, sold under the Lycra brandname for use in foundation apparel, is an elastomeric fiber comprising hard and soft segments within its polymer chains. A breathable nonporous polyurethane is an effective waterproofing agent for various fabrics, including knit fabrics for hospital mattresses to prevent bedsores. Thermoplastic polyurethanes and hot melt polyurethane reactive adhesives provide abrasion resistance, tear resistance, and weathering resistance. Polyurethane prepolymers and isocyanates used in fabric finishing impart or improve such properties as smoothness or prevent felting and shrinkage.
