Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studied changes in the parameters of cotton fiber molecular structure during ring and open end cotton yarn spinning. An Xray diffractometer using CuKa radiation monochromated with the Ross method determined the crystallinity index, size of the crystallites, and fiber texture. Optical and scanning electron microscopy analyzed changes in fiber morphological structure and tensile fractures. Both spinning systems decreased the cotton crystallinity index. Crystallite size and orientation remained unchanged during spinning. Scanning electron microscopy revealed such cotton fiber surface damage as cracks, cuticle layer creases, stratification, wrinkles, and surface folds after spinning. The open end spinning system caused greater fiber damage than did the ring spinning system. 19 refs.
