Cotton is the most important natural fiber with a market share of approximately 75 percent. World production and demand of cotton plateaued in the latter half of the 20th century, but forecasts indicate a recovery due to the increased demand for jeanswear. Jute has a low market share in industrialized countries but is important in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, Particularly in the packaging, home furnishings, and industrial fabrics sectors. Decreases in demand for virgin wool led to decreases in wool prices during the past 20 years. World production of flax fibers decreased from 800,000 tons in 1965 to 650,000 tons in 2000. Kapok fibers have applications in mattresses and upholstery cushions. World silk production has nearly doubled form 57,000 tons to 100,000 tons during the past 20 years. Hemp production declined steadily, but there is renewed interest in Europe and the United States.
