The cotton industry has stagnated and lost ground to manmade fibers during the past ten years. An overview of the problem addresses the symptoms of stagnation, raw cotton production, cotton consumption, cotton products, cotton product import and export markets, and Italy's role in world cotton markets. Cultivated area and raw cotton production remained almost unchanged from 1994-1995 to 2001-2002. The total number of cotton looms worldwide declined from 2.7 million in 1993 to 2.1 million in 1999. The Italian cotton industry has focused on machinery investment to increase productivity and has developed finer yarns for fabrics form more profitable market niches. Italy's cotton fabric export balance its cotton yarn imports.
