Higher production, consumption, stocks, and trade characterized the world cotton market in 2001-2002. Historical change in Brazil accounted for the majority of increases. Australia and Pakistan increased production 100,000 bales and 200,000 bales, respectively. The People's Republic of China increased Consumption 250,000 bales; Turkey 150,000 bale; Mexico, 100,000 bales; and the United States, 100,000 bales. Forecasts predict world exports will increase 406,000 bales. Increases in the United States and Australia will offset decreases in other regions. World stocks increased 378,00 bales to 44.8 million bales in May 2002. Future forecasts will include data on production in Bahrain and Mauritus.
