The development of activewear and sportswear fabrics is traced, highlighting new fibres, functional finishes and sportswear fabrics. Nanotechnology, information technology and genetic engineering are significantly impacting in the research and development of new multifunctional textiles. New development in fibres are described, citing Sesura™ fibres from Wellman, NatureWorks™ fibres from Cargill Dow and Lyocell fibres - Tencel from Acordis. Functional finishes. Higgins Industries product BFX+1 is cited as an example. Unitika’s work in this area is described. Acitve and sportswear fabric developments are listed-from DuPont, Toray Industries (eight ranges). Unitika (three ranges), Asahi-Kasei and Toyobo. Future multidisciplinary research effort are advocated to develop new products.
