External conditions can be sensed by “smart textiles” in three categories - Passive, active and very smart. Smart Material is defined and explained with three components which may be present: Sensors, actuators and controlling units. In this review passive smart textiles are examined. Optic fibre sensors and technologies are described, with localized sensing ability important in health monitoring applications. Optic fibre Bragg grating (FBG) is explained and applications. The variety of roles for optic fibre sensors is covered with examples cited in military clothing and medical monitoring incorporated in a shirt. The work Controls Inc. is described. Conductive fibre/fabric and passive smart textiles are reviewed with development by E. R. Post et al. WRONZ, Paratech Ltd and Electrotextiles Ltd. A promising future is forecast.
