The use of cotton in diapers is being explored by Edward McLean, Manager of Nonwovens Research and Implementation at Cotton Incorporated. The two-pronged approach comprises technology with cotton linters yielding a cleaner absorbent core for disposable diapers and secondly, marketing information with 75% of consumers preferring cotton based disposable diapers. The Absorblend band is described. Air-laid technology is facilitating the production of these diapers. Other cotton nonwoven applications are listed. Spunlace processing is an important nonwovens area with end products including disposable wipes, medical sponges and cosmetic pads. McLean faces a perception problem that cotton is difficult to work with using traditional nonwoven equipment, such as cards. Cotton tissues from Purely Cotton are also being introduced, carrying the Cotton seal. Other nondisposable products are being examined - Using cotton to manufacture webbing/batting fused with synthetics for various durable and semi-durable end-uses for both consumer and industrial use.
