High-performance textiles or smart textiles? There’s money in know-how

The 9th Techtextil exhibition held recently and the first Avantex form held in November 2000 demonstrated the increasing importance of high performance textiles to the industry. Some new developments are highlighted: Radiantly coloured Trevira yarns for hazard warning clothing: electrically conductive cellulose filaments; heat retention and exothermic functions; finishes such as sol-gel textile coating, plasma treatment and ceramic coating; and microcapsules UV protection. Finally, the likely future direction of the Avantex exhibition is discussed.
