Manufacturers are forced constantly to increase productivity and develop innovative products. The general uses of additives are indentified. An overview of the latest developments in functionalizing synthetic fibers through the use of appropriate effect additives is presented. Light stability of synthetic fibers examines polypropylene fibers, discussing the effects of HALS (hindered amine light stabilizers). Stabilization against UV-induced degradation of PA fibers is explored. And polyester fibers are similarly covered. Flame-retardant PP fibers are then explored, citing Flamestab NOR 116, a N-alkoxy (NOR) hindered amine. The MVSS 302 test was passed. Static electricity is then looked at in relation to PP and PET fibers and the use of Irgastat P, permanent anti-static products. Public concern about hygiene has encouraged the development of antimicrobials in synthetic fibers-Irgaguard B 1325 is discussed here. Ciba Specialty Chemicals’ aim is to develop integrated additive solutions for synthetic fibers. (9 fig 2 tab 4 ref).
