Properties and application of basalt fibres

In a paper presented to the 81st world Conference of the Textile Institute, basalt fibre properties are described and, at various temperatures, the mechanical properties are investigated. The uses of basalt fibres are discussed and some of the problems they present. The structure and composition of basalt fibres is explained and fibre strength analysis conducted. Fibre failure is examined by scanning electron microscopy. Three sets of experiments were carried out to look at the behaviour of basalt and glass fibres. Three properties were measured - tensile strength, deformation to break and dynamic acoustic modulus. Thermomechanical analysis was undertaken and the results discussed. Textile structures were created and tested. Particle emission was also analysed for possible health hazards. (4 fig, 7tab).
