In the age of constant efforts to improve the quality of textile products, constant efforts have gone into the production of microfibres. Conventional manufacture of man-made fibres has been well established during the early part of the century, however there has still been a constant endeavour to develop fibres resembling natural fibres such as silk. Improvements in the quality of polymers and new technology for extrusion have made it easier to produce filaments of 1.0 dtex to even as low as 0.1 dtex. These microfilament yarns have very different properties to those of standard filament yarns such as low stiffness in bending, low single filament strength and higher filament surface. Manufacturing techniques, microfibre properties and end use application are detailed here.
