The ancient Egyptians used flax fibers in fabrics beginning in approximately 5000 B.C. Flax was first grown in Europe in the 13th century. Successful retting of flax fibers in the river Lys gave rise to a strong flax spinning and weaving industry in Flanders. Dew retting and water retting of flax fibers yields unsatisfactory results for fiber fineness in the modern market and involves pollution problems. Extraction of flax fibers by osmotic pressure involves the diffusion of water molecules through semipermeable membranes. Saturation of water molecules into the living cells of harvested flax destroys the cells over time, resulting in the separation of the outer skin, fibers, and wooden core. Breaking and scotching recover the separated fibers. This method is nonpolluting and inexpensive and produces fibers suitable for textiles.
