Domestic flax breeding programs have developed 26 of the 35 flax cultivars grown in Russia. Intraspecies hybridization has enlarged the genetic pool for fiber and seed yield selection, lodging resistance, and resistance to fusarium and other flax diseases. The recently developed flax varieties A-29, A-93, alexim, Krom, Lenok, and T-16 have fiber yields of 2,500-2,800 kilograms per hectare. Some cultivars have fiber content of over 40 percent in the plant stem. Induced recombinogenesis and metagenesis improve flax fiber quality, vegetation period, yield control, and quality control. Pollen breeding methods could alter segregation in the next generation of flax plants and improve drought resistance and wilt resistance. Biotechnological methods will yield agronomically valuable lines genosources. 32 refs.
