Hemp plants produce 10 tons of biomass per hm(2). Hemp grows in cool, moderate climates where cotton, sisal, and jute are unable to grow efficiently. Hemp fiber production for apparel, industrial fabrics, and paper is environmentally friendly. Conventional hemp harvesting methods include manual cutting and binding prior to threshing, mechanical mowing and stem binding, and mowing with commercially produced hemp harvesting machines manufactured in Russia. High labor costs for each of these methods reduce profit margins. The Institute of Natural Fibres in Poland’s hemp harvesting method combines mowing with stem cutting in 0.7 meter sections and the removal of tops, which are collected on a trailer connected to the mower. The method increases harvesting efficiency to 1.5 hm(2) per hour and reduces labor requirements for harvesting hemp tops. 15 refs.
