Biotechnologies to improve the disease and logging resistance of hemp and flax plant varieties, increase straw yields, increase fiber fineness, and control fatty acid content will increase hemp and flax fiber applications. The Institute of Natural Fibres in Poland is conducting research projects that will modernize production and processing methods and increase the share of world markets for light weight hemp and flax fabrics. The institute developed methods for producing flax and hemp fibers with properties similar to those of cotton and wool fibers, modified yarn spinning methods to improve flax and hemp spinning, introduced bast fiber knitting methods, and developed finishing processes that minimize creasing in hemp/linen fabrics. Hemp and hemp/linen blend socks minimize odors by preventing skin mercerization and fungal growth. 15 refs.
