The genetic sequencing of glycosyltransferases facilitates remodeling of pecans and isolation of flax fibers. Researchers extended the catalog of encrusting polymers of fiber secondary walls with long chains of beta0(1-4)-D-galactan branched onto a rhamnogalacturonan backbone, arabinogalactan proteins, and glycin rich proteins. Immunogold labeling and electron microscopy mapped the distribution of epitopes associated with pectins and proteins within the cell walls, indicating that developing flax fibers synthesize and secrete substantial amounts of encrusting components other than cellulose. Polymers in the adhesive matrix between microfibrils and/or cellulose layers promote propagation of cracks along the matrix rather than across the fibers. 36 refs.
