Applications for shives and other waste material from flax, hemp, jute, ramie, kenaf, cotton, and coir growing and processing include paper, building materials, and home furnishings. Such waste materials yield cellulose, structural lignocellulosic boards, fibrous insulation, and upholstery composites. Reclaimed cellulose from agriculture has applications in the manufacture of paper currency, tobacco products, and hygiene fabrics. Lignocellulosic boards manufactured from plant residues range in density from 300-750 kilograms per cubic meter. Lignocellulosic composite boards are strong, durable, and flame resistant and have applications in interior walls and furniture. Hemp stem waste provides good thermal conductivity and weight to volume ratios for the manufacture of insulating boards for single family houses. 19 refs.
