The debate in Gujarat over the use of genetically modified (GM) cotton seeds, called BT cotton, which has the ability to eliminate the menace of the bollworm and increase yield, is reviewed. Farmers, politicians, intelligentsia and scientists are divided. The Government has not given clearance for their introduction but farmers in Gujarat had gone ahead with plating the BT cotton seeds and now risk their crop worth Rs. 100 crores being destroyed. Navbharat Seeds has been charged by the Government for selling the seeds without the required permission. Farmers have filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court against the Destruction move as their yields and quality have significantly increased. Pressure from the pesticides lobby is also an issue. The draft National Seeds Policy has not objected to import of GM seeds in India provided stated procedures are met. The results of field trials and environmental impacts are summarized.
