This article describes a new fibre developed by Lenzing and marketed as Lenzing Modal Fresh. The fibre is antimicrobial by virtue of an additive that is incorporated into the fibre itself. Three standard methods can be used to confer antimicrobial activity to a fibre. The first is by a finishing process applied to the fibre surface, the second by modifying the cellulosic chain, and the third by incorporation of a suitable antimicrobial agent into the spinning solution of a yarn, the preferred method here. Eight tables are placed in the text to show such items as physical properties of the new fibre compared with Lenzing Modal as a standard with the remaining seven showing test results under various conditions. The test results are given for woven and knitted fabrics from Modal Fresh. The text discusses test methodology and results. A large range of end-use products are being targeted for this new material.
