This article traces the development of the PTT polymer (polytrimethylene terephthalate) from the discovery of a commercial production process through current end user products. Produced by Shell chemicals using a proprietary cobalt catalyst and by Dupont from maize using biotechnology, the fibres made from this polymer have very useful qualities. A table gives figures for tensile strength, elongation, Young’s modulus and elongation recovery compared with other well-known fibres. Yarn produced from PTT is stated to show excellent stretch and stretch recovery characteristics while retaining a soft handle with good resistance to abrasion. Yarn production by Japanese companies Asahi Kasei and Toray are described with some notes on product development. On novel application by Asahi is for a stretchable sewing thread called “Solo” that confers additional benefits to clothing products.
