Fibres and backings are reviewed with the latest developments from four companies. Cargill Dow’s Nature Works fibres are the first natural-based material to supply inherent flame resistant properties conforming to and exceeding many regulations. Details of the attributes of the new fibres and the testing procedures are provided. Physical characteristics and environmental benefits are covered. The Federal Trade Commission created a new PLA classification for Nature Works, and the process is described. New developments from Dritex International using powder technology to coat textiles are discussed, and it is compared with latex coating. The conversion of latex machinery is included. R&D efforts are focused on producing a powder adhesive to tuft lock and bond the secondary backing in one process. Price increases for Lutradur spunbond polyester nonwovens by Freudenberg’s Tuft Division are noted, together with production details and markets. Lainaspin LA61, a water-soluble fibre lubricant for wool and wool/synthetic carpet yarns, has been launched by Benjn R. Vickers & Sons Ltd.
