At the end of 1992, several major Japanese cotton yarn manufacturers announced their intentions to reduce the number of spindles on their machinery. Unitika announced a plan to reduce its spindles from 227,736 in March 1992 to 120,504 by March 1994. In april 1993, Kanebo announced the curtailment of the production capacity of its subsidiary Kanebo Cotton Yarn from 194,000 spindles and 755 looms to 88,000 spindles and 412 looms. In July 1993, Shikibo announced a plan to reduce its number of spindles from 240,000 to 150,000 by 1995. The daily production of spun yarn in japan decreased to below 7,000 bales in September 1993, the lowest production level since May 1953. To compete in this severe economic climate, manufacturers are accelerating their efforts to develop new products for foreign markets. Such new products include the use of VP Finish (a fabric finishing treatment process) to produce Super Soft fabrics.
