The effects of ginning cotton without lint cleaners or with one or two lint cleaners on ring spinning performance and yarn properties were examined. Sample sliver was either single or tandem carded. Ring spinning produced both carded and combed yarns. The strength of the combed yarn was generally greater than that of the carded yarn. Both types of carding produced yarn with satisfactory strength properties. The yarns from the single carded sliver had a decrease in single strand tenacity as more lint cleaners were used. Nonuniformity increased simultaneously with the decrease in single strand tenacity. The same yarns showed the opposite tendency when tandem carding had been used. Increasing the number of lint cleaners resulted in fewer end breaks of combed yarns during spinning.
