NITRA researchers conducted a detailed examination of trends in power consumption during the spinning of cotton and manmade fibers at their Ring Frame Pilot Plant in Ghaziabad. The examination focused on process parameters, such as spindle speed, spindle lift, ring diameter, and traveler weight. The data were used to develop a mathematical model to extrapolate power consumption curves. THe model included the effect of fiber parameters, such as specific gravity, tenacity, tensile strength, breaking elongation, and moisture regain. On average, manmade fibers consumed 50 percent more power than cotton fibers during spinning and 15 percent more during packaging. 10 refs.
