A spinning machine has a sliver conveying arrangement for conveying slivers from a sliver can to a drafting unit, which comprises a movable belt having an inner belt surface and an outer belt surface. Holding elements are mounted on and carried by the belt for holding the sliver without slippage on the outer belt surface, such that the sliver moves at the same speed as the outer belt surface to prevent drafting of the sliver whilst it is being transported.
