The University of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials has developed a seven axis robotic workstation for the automated filament winding of continuous fiber composites. The design permits maximal flexibility in the manufacture of composite geometries. Whereas initial research focused on the wet filament winding of thermoset materials, the objective of more recent research has been the automated placement of thermoplastic tape. These efforts have yielded a thermoplastic tape laying head for the ned effector in the robot. The primary design concept integrated all elements of the thermoplastic winding process in the placement head. A description of research to develop the design of the workstation focuses on recent advances in the thermoplastic tape laying of glass/polypropylene tape and includes a detailed parameter and feasibility study of the thermoplastic tape laying lead. 6 refs.
