Researchers examined the benefits to yarn quality and spinning performance that arise from making modifications in ringframe drafting systems. Researchers introduced varying depressions into the nose bar's height for a portion of the width on the front side. The modifications caused a 14 to 45 percent reduction in yarn imperfections, particularly with short staple cotton fibers. Researchers also observed that modifications to the nose bar caused reductions in the imperfections of apron spacers and in the end breakage rate in ring spinning and winding. Lowering the nose bar also reduced imperfections, but at a lesser rate than modification. Researchers used soft cots of 65 degree shore hardness in combination with the modified nose bar to reduce yarn imperfections by 35 to 55 percent. They discovered that offsetting the back top roller marginally reduces imperfections, provided that the optimum back setting and break drafts were used. 5 refs.
