Engineers have developed several alternatives to coventional ring spinning, including spindle bearings and ring and traveler combinations, that overcome the limitations of ring spinning. An introduction to rotor spinning outlines the method of twist insertion, merits and limitations in comparison with ring spinning, cost comparisons between ring spinning and rotor spinning machines, yarn structure, twist factor, and the effect of rotor groove, speed, and diameter on machine performance. Modifications in such spinning preparatory processes as the blowroom, carding, drawing, combing, and doubling may be necessary to maximize machine performance and yarn quality in rotor spinning. Summaries also address such alternatives as friction spinning, air jet spinning, wrap spinning, core spinning, SKLF twist spinning, and the PlyfiL method of spinning parallel wound packages for doubled yarn.
