Proper humidity control is essential for proper spinning of cotton, a hygroscopic fiber. Harriet && Henderson Yarns has developed its own humidity control system for the Bladen plant, which produces 600,000 pounds of yarn per week. The company built its own humidity control system with off-the-shelf components starting with programmable logical controllers and two humidity sensors (one on the incoming air duct and the other on the return duct) per air conditioner. The dewpoint (set at 60 degrees Fahrenheit) is controlled by an open air washer designed by Harriet && Henderson and built by a local contractor. The simplicity of the system reduces equipment costs and calibration expenses. The system is part of Harriet && Henderson's goal to become chlorofluorocarbon-free and use environmentally friendly R-123 refrigerant in its plants.
