The surface and inner core of elliptical travellers were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Traveller parameters, the nature of the coating, the grain size and the uniformity of the surface finish were studied. Optimal profile parameters were identified. Although the inner core material was the same for all travellers studied, the surface coating material differed.
