Spinning Russian and Turkmenian cotton with high 'starfish' contnet

The object of this study was to investigate the spinnability of Russian and Turkmenian long-staple cotton with the familiar high content of so-called 'starfish', i.e. fimly intertwined fibre bunches with several ends. Ways were to be found for eliminating these starfish, up to and including the card. As the work reveals, this quite possible, for their percentage was reduced to 65％ in the blowroom and to 0％ in carding. However it must be noted that their elimination is achieved at great cost to the cylinder and flat wire, which are exposed to very severe wear. Though many card and clothing makers are working on better solutions, at present the only practicable approach is the one described here.
