In an analysis of the production stages in ring spinning the materials flow from bale opening to yarn store is analysed and a flow model is developed. The study is made with a view to reducing the operating costs per kg/yarn. It is shown that the final spinning process, consisting of a roving frame, ringframes and a winder, determines about 70% of the spinning costs. An analysis indicates that the least-effective ringframe controlled by a piecing robot usually produces more than the average manually-operated machine. Favourable spacing of the package units in the ringframe creel stabilizes production. Operating costs can be reduced by closing down the spinning preparation system for the weekend. One shift per day with no operative involvement is far better than an operative-free weekend.
