For part II see abstract 90W/04778. In part III the effects of cover shape on power loss are to produce air flow impact with the surface of the ratating pirn. The space in which the turning pirn stirs the air around itself is reduced by setting covers over and around it - the power loss can be reduced by a high cover, but if the cover height is less than the region in which air blows out from the rotating pirn, the power loss can be increased by the cover. A cover of triangular cross-section, and of which the base angles are 20, the same as the taper angle of the pirn, is the most effective shape of cover tested.
