Optimization of yarn packages for dyeing, twisting, or other processes is frequently required. Schaerer, Schweitler, and Mettler has developed the Robomat, a freely programmable robot that automatically handles yarn packages. The robot, which is suspended from a track, is capable of changing yarn packages on winding machines. Its functions include threading and splicing the yarn. The computer controls speed, acceleration, deceleration, and position. The novel suction gun draws yarn into an accumulator tube and then cuts the yarn. Because there is a dnager of the Robomat colliding with operators, sensors were installed that are capable of detecting the presence of a person or object and stopping the Robomat automatically.
