S Bigagli's new Cerifil process offers increased production rates and yarn quality and reduced production costs. In recent trials, the Cerifil system has resulted in increased production rates (by 50 percent compared with woolen ring spinning systems), reduced tension throughout the yarn-forming path, fewer end breaks, reduced yarn friction, more even twist distribution throughout the yarn, cost savings due to eliminating the need to replace travelers, avoidance of lubrication and ring maintenance, and increased productivity. Problems confronting the manufacture of a commercial machine include piecing, smooth start-up of the frame, under-winding, and automatic doffing. In recent trials, 80/20 wool/nylon yarns have been spun to Nm 15 at spindle speeds of 10,500 rpm and at a yarn delivery speed of 37 meters per minute.
