Small quantities of jute fiber were used to produce slivers and yarns, and variations in sliver and yarn properties during production were determined. The trials indicated that a small staple spinning technique can be used to produce slivers and yarns of better regularity than those produced on bulk spinning equipment or from small-scale spinning using standard methods. Variations were due to the inherent character of reed tapering in jute, as well as even distribution o the overlapping zone in the feed apron over its entire length. Dividing dry samples into four parts and placing the treated fiber on a stationary breaker card apron in a carefully specified manner improved regularity in feeding and produced better quality slivers and yarns. 13 refs.
