Critical parameters in two-strand yarn spinning are strand convergence angle and strand twist above the convergence point. To evaluate the effects of these parameters during spinning, bi-colored multi-filament yarns were fed directly from the front rollers of a ring frame under a range of conditions. Photography was used to demonstrate two-strand yarn spinning geometry and the effects of major machine variables, spinning tension, ply yarn twist, and strand space at the front roller nip. The average strand twist above the convergence point was lower than the ply twist in the two-strand yarn below and varied depending on machine settings. Fine yarns caused a lower strand twist and a greater convergence angle. The effects of strand space and spinning tension on twist were measured. 5 refs.
