Matka spinning, a traditional method used by women from poor families in the Murshidabad and Malda districts of West Bengal, is described. Matka is hand-spun mulberry silk yarn drawn out of cut and pierced mulberry cocoons. The employment potential of the technique and associated spinning and weaving activities is discussed. The scope for mechanization is also considered.
