As a result of more aggressive harvesting methods the quality of cotton is deteriorating since leaf particles and wood splinters are finding their way into the fibres. Details are given a process for evaluating cotton quality involving digital image processing which can be used to determine the effect of different processing and machine parameters on the number and size of problem particles during cleaning and in the card sliver. The problem particle content depends mainly on the variety of cotton. Baling pressure is also a factor, whereas the ginning method is rather less important in relation to the card sliver problem particle content. The system examined permits a differential analysis of the problem particle content with regard to count and size.
