Researchers tested the comparative surface and abrasion resistance of ring spun and rotor spun yarns. They used a Staff tester, to simulate the processing behavior of staple fiber yarns, in combination with a Zweigle hairiness measuring unit to determine surface changes expressed as a change in yarn hairiness. Data showed that rotor spun yarns had a low degree of hairiness and good surface resistance due to the wrapping fibers on the surface, which acted as a protective layer against frictional stress. Tests with the Zweigle yarn abrasion tester revealed good abrasion resistance for counter twist yarns and low abrasion resistance for twist-on-twist ply yarns. Data showed that singeing and mercerizing cotton ply yarns degraded their surface resistance. Rotor spun yarns showed better abrasion resistance than ring spun yarns. Ply yarn abrasion resistance increased as ply twist increased. 52 refs.
