The applications of the AFIS system in the textile process are discussed. Two main topics are noted: classification of AFIS information; and utilization of AFIS in understanding fibre/machine interaction. Examples are provided to illustrate these points. Cotton processing is the basis. It is pointed out that AFIS differs from conventional techniques in two main respects: AFIS tests the details which are critically needed in optimizing the process; and AFIS requires trained staff at all levels to interprete the results precisely and translate the information into improvements.
