SITRA developed a mathematical formula to determine the cost of production in a spinning mill. The conversion cost per kilogram of yarn depends on the count and type of yarn and the working conditions in the mill. The formula uses 17 variables to calculate the cost of production per kilogram of yarn for a given count. Researchers used the formula to analyze the conversion cost per kilogram of cone yarn for ten common yarn counts for the years 1991, 1993, and 1996 for one mill. The data showed that conversion costs increased approximately 12.5 percent per year during the period 1991-1996. Conversion costs increased greatly as yarn counts became finer. Combed yarn conversion costs were 10-15 percent higher than carded yarn costs. Conversion costs, expressed as a ratio of cotton cost, remained stable for a given yarn count for the years tested.
