In 1996, shipments of single heater drawtexturing spindles for nylon yarns reached 9,600 spindles and shipments of double heater drawtexturing spindles for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarns reached 95,700 spindles. This corresponds to sales of approximately 500 drawtexturing machines. In Western Europe, production of textured nylon yarns increased 18 percent to 111,700 tons and production of textured PET yarns decreased 2 percent to 228,500 tons. Asian manufacturers bought 63 percent of drawtexturing spindles sold in 1996. Brazil, South Korea, Turkey, the People's Republic of China, and Italy accounted for 70 percent of spingle heater drawtexturing machine sales.
