Researchers developed computer models for high speed yarn transport systems. Models for ring spinning and twisting predict balloon shape and tension, including the effects of control rings, and reveal process instabilities that might lead to yarn breakage. They also developed similar models for yarn unwinding. Their primary goal is to develop nonlinear models that predict tension and balloon shape of yarns undergoing high speed translation and rotation. Models are being developed for such yarn manufacturing processes as unwinding from cylindrical packages, unwinding from conical packages, winding and twisting, and two-for-one twisting. A prototype system includes a Rieter yarn transport machine and tension heads, balloon rotation sensor, strobes, video camera, and computer.
