Estimation of Spinning Tension from the Characteristic Smallest Value of Yarn Strength

The characteristics smallest value (CSV) of a yarn sample is the value for which there is only one smaller value in the sample. The CSV of yarn strength equals the minimum strength of the yarn. Therefore, the minimum tension during spinning approximately equals the CSV of the yarn strength. Maximum yarn tension is normally twice the minimum yarn tension. The minimum yarn tension in the spinning machine determines the minimum strength of the spun yarn. No part of the spun yarn can have a strength lower than the minimum spinning tension. Equations for calculating the minimum spinning tension from the yarn strength values are provided. The CSV of strength is approximately 23 percent of the mean yarn strength. Therefore, the minimum spinning tension is approximately 23 percent of the mean yarn strength for a yarn with a normal end break rate during spinning. 3 refs.
