To develop nonlinear models for high speed yarn transport system, researchers are investigating models for textile processes that involve rotating balloons, including unwinding from cylindrical or conical yarn packages, ring twisting and winding, and two-for-one twisting. Analyses will consider yarn elastic deformatin, tension, and balloon shape variation. Nonlinear simulations will enable prediction of fluttering dynamic balloon instabilities that would lead to large rapid tension variations. Researchers will incorporate modifications to the model into process design software. The project is using a new unwinding test stand comprising a Rieter yarn transport machine and tension head, balloon rotation sensor, strobes, video camera, and personal computer.
