The use of on-line quality monitoring systems in the various stages of the staple yarn spinning process is reviewd. The working principles and advantages of commercially available systems are presented for use in foreign fibre detection and on-line waste control in the blow room and for quality and production monitoring in carding, combining, drawframe, fly frame, ring frame, rotor spinning and in cone winding. Equipment is available for monitoring in all of these areas and for controlling in all but combining and cone winding.
