egyptian long-staple cotton which is exported at a relatively high price and is used by importing countries to spin a fine yarn, has been increasingly used domestically to spin coarse and medium yarns which are then used domestically or exported. the paper investigates the economic efficiency of the egyptian spinning industry, including this apparently inefficient practice of substituting yarn for raw cotton in the export trade
